About Permit Answers
We collect official building-permit publications and turn them into searchable, traceable information for research across the United States.
WHY WE EXIST
The information is public.
The answer is often hard to find.
A single project can require reading department pages, fee schedules, technical bulletins and separate trade rules. A mailing address may not even identify the authority that makes the decision.
Permit Answers organizes those publications into a document catalog, reviewed information records and preserved versions. Search by region and project, compare source statements and download traceable data.
Explore our platform ↗OUR ROLE
An independent information service.
We help homeowners, contractors and design professionals navigate published requirements. We do not issue permits, approve plans or replace the judgment of a government authority.
Each reviewed record retains its scope, source version, evidence location and review date. Read our methodology for how those checks are performed and their limits.

Clarity is an operational standard.
Evidence first
Start with official department publications. Keep direct source links attached to the guidance.
Read our approach →Context always
Specify the jurisdiction, property type and conditions. Do not turn uncertainty into an exemption.
Read our approach →Corrections matter
Provide a visible route to challenge a statement with current evidence. Commercial interests do not decide the answer.

Coverage follows the evidence.
Our collection plan spans all 50 states and Washington, DC, with 100 initial target regions. The directory separately counts captured publications, reviewed information and missing document categories. Planned regions are clearly marked; one document does not establish complete local coverage.
